FOUR GENERATIONS OF FAMILY OWNERSHIP
Bolyard Lumber & Design has been family-owned for four generations, rooted in the entrepreneurial spirit of Ona Love Bolyard, who began the company in 1937. Today, Jake Bolyard, along with the fourth generation, proudly continues the legacy across three storefronts, upholding a tradition of exceptional service, quality, and value. The company is guided by values-based leadership, honoring its history while building for the future.

Ona Love Bolyard begins selling lumber from his backyard at the corner of 6 Mile Rd and Woodward, laying the foundation for what would become a thriving business.

1940
The company opens its first storefront in Hazel Park, marking the beginning of its journey in providing quality lumber and building materials to the local community.

1958
Following the passing of founder Ona Bolyard, his son Dale Bolyard assumes the role of President, continuing the family legacy.

1966
Hazel Park location tragically burns to the ground. With determination, the company rebuilds, emerging stronger and revitalized in the community.

The company opens its second location in Rochester Hills, expanding its reach and services in the community.

1997
Jake Bolyard, Dale’s son, takes the helm as President of the company, driving the company’s growth.

1999-2003
The Rochester Hills location is reconcepted from a traditional hardware store to a “showroom,” enhancing the customer experience and showcasing a wide array of products.

2009
After 60+ years of serving the Hazel Park community, the company closes its Hazel Park location. In a strategic move to grow its presence, it opens a new location in Birmingham, embracing new opportunities and expanding its reach.

2018
The company opens a dedicated window-centric showroom in Ann Arbor, showcasing a diverse range of window products and innovations, enhancing customer access and experience to Southwestern Michigan.

Today
Bolyard Lumber & Design enters its 4th generation of family operation, with Jake Bolyard and the fourth generation—John Monigold, Nick Monigold, Liz Bolyard Moore, and Brian Bolyard—actively involved in daily operations, continuing the family legacy of excellence in the lumber and building materials industry.
